Voting Registration

Why should women VOTE?

According to the Institute for Women's Policy Research, Tennessee is ranked:
  1. 50th in the nation in women’s political participation:
    • Only 64% of Tennessee women are registered to vote. On this measure, Tennessee is last in the region behind Alabama, Mississippi and Kentucky.
    • Only 44% of registered Tennessee women voted in 1998 and 2000. Again, last in the region.

  2. 46th in the nation in women’s employment and earnings

    • Tennessee women’s median annual earnings is $23,232. (1999)

    • The ratio of women’s to men’s earnings is 73%. (1999)

    • Women in managerial and professional occupations is 28%. (2000)

  3. 45th in the nation in women’s health and well-being

  4. 44th in the nation in the percentage of women with bachelor’s degrees

    • only 14% of Tennessee women have four or more years of college (1990)

…because electing candidates devoted to improving the economic status of Tennessee’s women will affect all aspects of Tennessee life.

Here’s what YOU can do:

  • VOTE on election day

  • REMIND OTHERS to register and to vote! Don't assume that your friends and coworkers vote or are even registered to vote. You'd be surprised!

  • LEARN about the candidates for local and statewide office so that you can make informed decisions

Learn more about the economic status of Tennessee women at http://www.state.tn.us/sos/ecw or by calling the Tennessee Economic Council on Women at (615) 253-4266.
